Stepwest Stories – Javier, Working Holiday in The Rockies
Each month, we highlight one of our program participants experiences through Stepwest Stories, to discover more about how their working experiences in Canada are unfolding! This month, we wanted to take Stepwest Stories to the Rocky Mountains, so we packed our things and drove about 10 hours from Vancouver all the way to Banff, to highlight the story of Javier from Chile during his Working Holiday Canada experience in Banff.
Javier is originally from Viña del Mar in Chile, where he worked as a chef. His first international experience in another country was working in USA, where he first had the chance to work in a resort and improve his knowledge of gastronomy as he wanted. Afterwards, he returned to Chile and began to work as a Head Chef, but he wanted to continue to improve his English and gain new cooking skills abroad, so it was at that moment he thought about Canada! He contacted his agency in Chile and asked them for advice about where would be the best destination for him to work on attaining his dream of becoming a skilled chef with international experience in gastronomy, and Canada was his first choice!
Javier knew he would need to find a way to make his resume stand out among those from other applicants, so he created a short video to present his skills in gastronomy and as a chef. When we received his video here at Stepwest, we realized immediately that Javier was very talented and we wanted to find the best possible position for him! As we expected, he landed the first interview that we helped him organize and got the job! Javier was now ready to prepare his trip to Canada!
He secured his Working Holiday visa in advance through the International Experience Canada (IEC) program and last June 2014, Javier, along with his friend Nico, also a chef who secured a job with the help of Stepwest, made their trip from Santiago de Chile to Vancouver. They arrived at our office for an in-person orientation, where we helped them to get everything ready for their trip to Banff the next day: including a valid Social Insurance Number, a Canadian bank account, and perhaps most important of all, a bus ticket up to Banff! The trip was arranged quickly, and after spending one day in Vancouver to take in the city and sights, Javier and Nico took a bus to the Rockies where the resort staff were waiting to welcome them!
After now having spent almost 8 months living in Banff, Javier has nothing but good things to say about his international experience in Canada. Get to know a little bit more about Javier’s experience in the video below, and hear all about his perspective of the town lifestyle, challenges he has faced while living in the city of Banff, and what he is liking the most about his experience as a participant in our Working Holiday Resort Program.
We want to thank Javier and Nico for sharing their time with us at the resort where they are currently working, and for waking up early just to meet with us before starting work! It was really nice seeing you guys again, and seeing that almost everybody at the resort knows you for the good work you’ve done so far! We are glad the experience has been positive, and that you are making so many friends and memories in Canada.
