Cristina is from Spain and is enrolled in our Academic Internship Program in Canada. After finishing her Bachelors Degree in Law in Spain, she decided to come to Vancouver to improve her English level and to gain new cultural experiences. Cristina chose Vancouver, as she always wanted to travel to Canada and felt that Vancouver offered the most opportunities, both professionally and culturally. “It is a very unique place and I don’t think I have ever seen anywhere that offers so much and is so naturally beautiful”, says Cristina.
Asked if she could compare it to anywhere she has visited before, she replied “Its like a mix of a lot of different places, the buzz of Downtown is like some European capitals and then the quieter beaches and parks remind me of areas in Northern Spain but it is the cultural diversity that separates Vancouver from anywhere else – it’s a hub for all nationalities which makes it easy to make friends and experience different cultural traditions”.
Cristina registered in the Academic Internship Program. She first went to an ESL school for one month to improve her English level and then was ready to begin her marketing internship in Canada with one of Vancouver’s growing companies.
After reviewing her Canadian-style resume and going through an interview preparation seminar with one of our STEPWEST coordinators, Cristina decided that she wanted to do a professional internship in the area of marketing as she is an avid blogger and loves all areas of social media and photography. An interview was scheduled with an online marketing company in West Vancouver, located 10 minutes from Downtown. She did a great job during the interview and was offered the position of Social Media Intern, where her responsibilities included social media monitoring, website development, updating company blogs and newsletters, translating between English and Spanish and assisting in upcoming projects.
As part of our monitoring, we met up with Cristina at her office to find out how she is getting on in her position. She really loves the job as she has the ability to be creative and come up with new ideas and projects to boost the company’s social media standing. “As the company is a relatively new start-up, I feel as though my opinion really makes a difference. Everyone has only been here for under one year so the place is buzzing with ideas and strategies”, said Cristina. As Vancouver is home to some of the best and most innovative start-ups, it allows people like Cristina to bring their own ideas and creativity straight to the decision makers.
Throughout her experience, Cristina has learned a lot about the marketing world, online social media and project management. In just under 6 months, her English level has gone from Intermediate to Fluent and her international marketing experience has allowed her to become a social media expert. This marketing internship in Canada will most definitely give Cristina a competitive edge over other applicants throughout her future career.
