Stepwest Stories – Lubica & her Working Holiday in Tofino, Canada
Considered by many to be a piece of Canadian paradise, Tofino was the destination choice for Lubica, one of our Working Holiday Canada participants from Slovakia during 2014.
Located on the west coast of Vancouver Island, Tofino is a charming town renowned for its stretch of beaches and century-old trees. It is also a world-class surf destination. Beginners and experts alike can surf the impressive waves in an untouched natural setting. The waves keep rolling along miles of sandy beaches – 35km of surf-able beach break to be exact, leaving plenty of room for all boarders, from absolute beginners to seasoned long boarders.
We got the chance to get to know more about Lubica’s international experience right before she was about to finish her experience in Canada. Lubica arrived in Vancouver at the beginning of 2014, ready to make the most of her Working Holiday in Canada. “I was twice in USA, where I improved my English skills, so I was interested to continue learning English and get international work experience. That’s why I got in contact with an agency in Slovakia that was very helpful and put me in touch with Stepwest. Few days after I sent my application to Stepwest and I got my first interview!”.
Lubica did her interview for a Resort in Tofino through Skype from Slovakia and she got hired right away! “The agency in my home country and Stepwest helped me a lot to understand the whole International Experience Canada visa process, so once I got my Young Professional visa approved, I was ready to start my Canadian dream.”
After stopping by in our office to set up all the administrative tasks, like opening a bank account, getting her SIN Number and a Canadian cellphone, Lubica was ready to travel to Tofino to start her new job!
“When I arrived in Tofino, a staff from the Resort came to pick me up at the bus station and took me to the hotel. I got a bedroom for two people in great conditions. Everything was new to me so getting used to it was a little hard at the beginning, but the best was yet to come”. Lubica started working the day after her arrival and she mentioned that she always felt really welcomed by the whole Resort Team. She started to get to know the people and every day she felt more comfortable in Tofino.
“I always tried to do my job the best I could. The managers were very satisfied with my job and I got offered to work more hours. I never said no if they asked me to stay longer. I knew that working hard would get me great results! In April I got promoted to Housekeeping Supervisor, that involved more responsibility, but better conditions as well”. During her work experience in Canada she got the chance to work with a very young and motivated team and she learnt how to lead a team, how to work under the pressure and how to deal with customers, etc… Lubica was a great example of a Working Holiday participant that always tries her best during her experience; learning to face challenges is the best way to get the best results out of it! From Stepwest we wish you, Lubica the very best during your career and we are really happy that we could help you to have a great Working Holiday experience in Canada!
